Many of my life coaching clients first come to me because they are curious about my journey of “going solo.” They wonder if they have what it takes to make the same leap and hang their own shingle. Many women feel burnt out, voiceless in their firm, undervalued, underpaid, and are just ready for a change.
The COVID-19 Wakeup Call
I am finding more and more women in this boat now that the COVID-19 epidemic is finally starting to wane. What do I mean? As awful as COVID was, being trapped at home wasn’t all that terrible for some of us. We could run into our home office and bill our hours; we could throw in some laundry; have the crockpot going; check in on the kiddos; and see first-hand what they were up to in school (albeit virtual). We felt like we were actually present at home. Don’t get me wrong, I know it wasn’t this blissful for everyone. But for so many of us, there were blissful moments amidst the chaos. For so many of us, we felt like we were a more present mom. Did we want to pull our hair out sometimes? Sure. Did a Zoom call get interrupted? Naturally. However, we got to be a lawyer and a mom daily, which was not always the case in pre-COVID life. Also, if you were anything like me, your billables were higher than average, if not right on par. (Perhaps you struggled with being too productive?)
And now your boss wants to see your butt in a seat in the office. And you are dreading it—big time.
For the last 12-18 months, you were finally able to get more done. You got to show up to meetings and court barefoot and in comfy leggings. Your feet had never been so happy and free!
Who would want to give that up?
Who says you should necessarily have to?
You Dream of Becoming your Own Boss
What if you could be your own boss? Decide the days you will go into an office. Decide the days you will work from home. Decide your hours. Decide the clients with whom you will work?
I have heard from so many of you that you have been dreaming of “Going Solo.” The very next thing I hear is you aren’t quite sure if and how to pull that trigger. Why? Because of fear. Fear of so many things and so many unknowns.
In my 1-1 life coaching sessions with clients, I found that FEAR is our number one holdback. I can tell you; it was definitely mine, but not for the reasons you might think.
Fear is Holding You Back from Going Solo
I have seen these 4 Sources of FEAR time and time again:
- Finances. You are afraid you won’t make enough money. You won’t have enough referrals. You won’t be able to make ends meet and support your family. How to manage your IOLTA account? How will you pay yourself? How do you do all of this!?
- Start-Up. You don’t even know how to BEGIN setting up your own firm. Where do you start? How do you start? What should be first? What matters? What doesn’t?
- Relationships. This fear is a toughie and pulls on our hearts so hard it is difficult to take any action because these feelings paralyze us. This fear is the one that held me back a long time. I was fearful of leaving my firm and losing the relationships I had there. I was afraid of what others might think if I left a well-regarded and well-known firm. Would leaving the firm also hurt my relationships with people outside of the firm in ways I could not fathom?
- Time Management. Perhaps you are afraid that without the accountability of a boss or other partner, you will waste your day away and not bill the proper amount of hours. Heck, now that you are on your own, you don’t even know how much to bill!
Is this you?

Why Me?
In 2018, I decided it was time for me to go solo (check out my law firm’s website here). This decision weighed on my heart for a long time, and I have been where you are, trying to decide. I was fortunate to have several mentors walk me through the process of facing my fears and opening up my shop, and I want you to have this too. Financially? I hit my success goals and then some. In my first month, I gave myself a raise. In the first 6 months, I paid off all of my start-up expenses. In my first 12 months, I maxed out my 401(k).
All in all? I am making close to double what I used to make. I am taking the cases I want to take. I am working the hours I want to work. I am living the life I designed. Not one that someone else made for me. I want this for you. The better question is, do you want this for you as well?
